Warners Bay Wildlife Refuge is a 144-acre habitat dedicated to preserving coastal wetlands and marshlands on the south shore of Lake Ontario in northern Erie County, New York. The refuge serves as a vital stopover and nesting site for numerous migratory bird species, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers and naturalists alike. The area comprises marshes, shallow ponds, sedge meadows, and forested uplands, supporting a wide variety of flora and fauna. Historically, this region was used by Native American communities and later by early European settlers for fishing and hunting. Today, the preserve is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) with the goal of maintaining the ecological integrity of the wetlands while providing public access for low-impact recreational activities. Visitors can explore several unpaved trails and observation platforms that provide excellent views of the bay and its abundant wildlife. The refuge is especially active during spring and fall migrations, with opportunities to see species like herons, egrets, ducks, and occasional rare birds.
