About Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge

Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, located on the scenic island of Kauai, offers a haven for endangered Hawaiian waterbirds and awe-inspiring views of lush taro fields and verdant mountains.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge encompasses more than 900 acres on Kauai's north shore, predominantly comprising lush taro fields and wetlands bounded by dramatic mountains. Established to protect endangered waterbirds such as the Hawaiian goose (nene), Hawaiian duck (koloa), and Hawaiian coot (alae keokeo), the refuge offers exceptional opportunities for bird watching. Its wetlands, valleys, and ridges not only support a diverse range of native fauna but also play an important role in the traditional Hawaiian agricultural practice of taro farming. Visitors may explore the area by guided tours showcasing its ecological and cultural significance. Despite being a site for environmental conservation, certain portions of the refuge might be restricted, ensuring the protection of habitats and species residing here.
