About Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is a critical habitat in southern Texas, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially birdwatching and endangered species observation along the Rio Grande Delta.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, located in Cameron County near the northern edge of the Gulf of Mexico, covers over 97,000 acres of coastal wetlands, brushlands, and tidal flats. Established in 1946 to protect the endangered ocelot and other vulnerable species, the refuge is one of the most biologically diverse habitats along the Texas coast. Its landscape includes tidal lagoons, salt flats, freshwater ponds, and thorn scrub forest. Visitors encounter a wide variety of wildlife, including over 400 bird species, white-tailed deer, alligators, and the elusive endangered ocelot—the most endangered cat in the United States. The refuge is a critical wintering ground for waterfowl and a popular stopover on the Central Flyway for migratory birds. Recreation on the refuge primarily centers on birdwatching, guided photography tours, hiking on designated trails, and wildlife observation from blinds and observation towers. The Laguna Atascosa Visitor Center offers educational exhibits and provides information about ongoing conservation efforts. The refuge’s scenic driving routes and boardwalks give visitors insight into coastal ecosystems and allow for intimate views of coastal flora and fauna. Its proximity to nearby communities such as Rio Hondo and Harlingen makes it accessible yet still secluded enough to offer a peaceful outdoor experience. Laguna Atascosa's coastal environment is important for the conservation of endangered species and sets a unique outdoor destination for eco-tourists, naturalists, and photographers.
