Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Lone Elk Park is located within the county limits of St. Louis County, Missouri, providing a unique urban wildlife experience just a few miles from the metropolitan area. Encompassing approximately 546 acres, the park serves as a protected refuge primarily for large herbivores including elk, bison, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey. The landscape includes rolling hills, open grasslands, woodlands, and small ponds, creating an environment that supports diverse wildlife and offers excellent opportunities for observation and photography. The park was established in the 1960s as a response to declining native wildlife populations and the need for a secure habitat in proximity to urban development. Visitors typically explore the park via a one-way 4-mile scenic drive, supplemented by several short walking trails where wildlife can sometimes be viewed up close. Lone Elk Park is particularly popular for family outings, birdwatching, educational outings, and casual wildlife viewing. In addition to animals, the park features picnic areas and a small visitor parking area. It is managed by the county and remains free and open to the public during daylight hours. Lone Elk Park’s proximity to St. Louis makes it accessible for a quick wilderness escape without extensive travel, ideal for visitors interested in observing iconic native species within a controlled but natural setting.
