About Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge

Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge is a vital habitat along the Illinois River, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching, fishing, and nature observation in a mix of bottomland forests and wetland ecosystems.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge is located in southwestern Illinois, spanning parts of Morgan and Cass counties along the Illinois River. Established in 1958, the refuge protects important bottomland hardwood forests, backwater lakes, sloughs, and floodplain wetlands that support a diverse array of wildlife. The refuge plays a critical role in providing habitat for migratory waterfowl, such as mallards, wood ducks, and Canada geese, especially during fall and spring migrations. It also serves various species of wading birds, including great blue herons and egrets, as well as bald eagles that winter in the area.

The refuge’s floodplain environment is shaped by the dynamic waters of the Illinois River, which create a rich mosaic of aquatic and terrestrial habitats. This ecosystem supports white-tailed deer, beaver, river otter, and a variety of amphibians and reptiles. Fishing is popular in the refuge’s waters, with species like bass and catfish available to anglers.

While there are no developed hiking trails, the refuge offers limited access points for wildlife viewing, photography, and paddling. Visitors often take advantage of the quiet surroundings to observe birds from designated viewing areas or by boat. The refuge’s location near the small town of Meredosia provides convenient access for day trips focused on nature observation. The combination of wetlands and forests establishes it as a significant refuge for conservation and outdoor enthusiasts seeking peaceful encounters with Midwestern wildlife.
