About Mississippi River Floodplain Forests

The Mississippi River Floodplain Forests are vital riparian ecosystems stretching along the Mississippi River, offering diverse wildlife habitat and unique outdoor recreation opportunities such as birdwatching, hiking, and paddling.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mississippi River Floodplain Forests extend along the lower and middle stretches of the Mississippi River, covering portions of 10 states from Minnesota to Louisiana. These floodplain forests thrive in the seasonally inundated areas adjacent to the river, shaped by periodic flooding cycles that sustain rich soils and diverse habitats. The ecosystem supports a variety of tree species including silver maple, cottonwood, American sycamore, and various oaks. The forests provide critical habitat for numerous bird species, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, some of which are species of conservation concern. Historically, these forests played a crucial role in indigenous cultures for hunting, fishing, and gathering, and later became important for timber and flood control efforts. Today, large protected sections can be found within National Wildlife Refuges such as the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge and the Shawnee National Forest.

Visitors are drawn to the area for wildlife viewing, particularly during spring and fall migrations when migratory birds use the floodplain for resting and feeding. Recreational opportunities include hiking along levee trails, canoeing and kayaking through calm backwaters and sloughs, and fishing for bass, catfish, and other species in the flooded forest channels. Notable landmarks include the Great River Bluffs and various bottomland hardwood stands part of protected refuges. The floodplain forests offer a quiet, natural setting to observe ecological interactions and experience the dynamic seasonal changes influenced by river flooding.
