About Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge

Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge protects a series of islands along the Ohio River, providing vital habitat for migratory birds and offering unique river-based outdoor recreation opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge spans over 3,000 acres distributed across more than 20 islands and river shores in the Ohio River near West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. The refuge was established in 1990 to protect and restore habitat for migratory birds, fish, and other wildlife that thrive along this key waterway. The islands are home to important species such as bald eagles, great blue herons, waterfowl, freshwater mussels, and several fish species. The refuge’s riverine and wetland environments sustain diverse plant communities including bottomland hardwood forests and aquatic vegetation important for wildlife breeding, feeding, and nesting. Visitors can enjoy paddling, fishing, birdwatching, and nature observation, with seasonal opportunities to witness spring and fall migrations. While the islands are largely undeveloped, some accessible areas and boat launches provide routes for kayakers and anglers to explore the unique habitats. The refuge’s collaborative management between state and federal agencies contributes to conserving the river ecosystem and enhancing public appreciation for riverine natural resources. Historic remnants of former river settlements and river transportation add cultural interest to visits. The refuge encourages low-impact recreation and education focused on river ecology and conservation. Its location close to multiple urban centers makes it a valued natural oasis amid the highly developed Ohio River corridor.
