Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Presquile National Wildlife Refuge is located on the south bank of the James River in Virginia, near the town of Hopewell. The refuge encompasses approximately 1,329 acres of tidal marshes, open water, hardwood forests, and grasslands. Its geography is defined by its position on an island-like peninsula created by the James River and Presquile Creek, which provides critical habitat for a variety of wildlife. Established in 1953, Presquile was originally agricultural land until it was acquired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for habitat restoration and wildlife management purposes. The refuge is particularly important as a wintering ground for Canada geese and other migratory waterfowl, and it supports populations of white-tailed deer, beavers, and numerous bird species. Recreational opportunities include wildlife viewing, photography, and environmental education. The refuge features a nature trail and an observation platform that allows visitors to view waterfowl and other wildlife in their natural environments.
