Miankaleh Wildlife Sanctuary, located in northern Iran within Mazandaran Province, is a narrow peninsula projecting into the Caspian Sea. Covering a diverse landscape of coastal dunes, wetlands, marshes, and forests, Miankaleh supports a range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. This sanctuary is internationally recognized under the Ramsar Convention for its critical wetlands that provide refuge for migratory birds, including numerous species of ducks, herons, pelicans, and rare birds such as the white-headed duck and the Dalmatian pelican. The region also hosts wild boars, Caspian seals, and the endangered Persian leopard in nearby forested areas. Its ecological importance has made it a hotspot for birdwatchers, researchers, and nature lovers.
The sanctuary's geography is notable for its long, thin strip of land separating the Caspian Sea from the Gorgan Gulf and Anzali Lagoon, creating a series of brackish and freshwater habitats. Historically, Miankaleh has been protected since the 1950s, with expanded conservation efforts in later decades to combat threats from development and pollution. Visitors are drawn to its remote beaches, bird observation towers, and the tranquil experience of exploring its natural beauty, primarily through guided tours given the sensitive nature of the environment. Recreational activities are mostly wildlife viewing, photography, and ecological study rather than hiking or camping since access is restricted to protect the fragile ecosystem.
Miankaleh offers a remarkable glimpse of Caspian biodiversity and is vital for maintaining fish spawning grounds and migratory bird flyways. It remains one of Iran’s most important protected natural areas, emphasizing conservation and environmental awareness.
