What the day feels like
After a late-morning classroom session along the Overseas Highway, you break for lunch and reconvene at Silent World in the early afternoon for a guided boat snorkel. REEF interns demonstrate ID and survey technique, you enter the water with a required snorkel vest and observe fish from the surface or short shallow dives, then return to submit your survey and discuss notable sightings.

Plan for about 5.5 to 6 hours total; the day starts with an 11:00 AM REEF classroom session, a lunch break, and a 1:15 PM check-in at Silent World for the snorkel.
Classroom check-in is at REEF Campus (98380 Overseas Hwy., MM 98.3 median). Boat/snorkel check-in is at Silent World Dive Center, 51 Garden Cove Drive, Key Largo.
Bring a mask/snorkel, reef-safe sunscreen, a small underwater camera if you wish (helpful but optional), and be prepared to wear a snorkel vest in the water. Note operator rules: full-face snorkel masks, weight belts, and underwater scooters are not allowed; drones are prohibited.
All snorkelers must be at least 5 years old, able to swim in water deeper than they can stand, and sober—alcohol or drug use will bar boarding. Smoking and vaping are not allowed on vessels or property.

No — full-face snorkel masks and underwater scooters (DPVs) are not allowed on board.
Can I complete and submit REEF surveys from the surface?
Yes — surveys can be completed entirely from the surface or during shallow surface dives; REEF interns will teach observation and survey methods during the program.
