This SUP + kayak river trip begins with on-river instruction in the safety of a large eddy before setting downstream for a roughly five‑mile float through calm water, deep canyon walls and occasional class II rapids; along the way paddlers encounter gold‑medal trout and a roster of wildlife in the Gunnison Gorge NCA.

Outing Highlights

THE SKILL

Beginner to Confident Paddler

Professional guides deliver personalized instruction in a protected eddy so even complete beginners gain the balance and technique to stand, kneel or paddle with confidence — and many stand through the rapids by day’s end.

THE ROUTE

Five Miles Through Deep Canyon and Class II Water

The run covers about five miles downstream, alternating calm flatwater and short sections of class II rapids as you float between canyon walls that funnel the river and shape the ride.

THE WILDLIFE

River Wildlife and an Archaeological Stop

The Gunnison Gorge supports great blue heron, bighorn sheep, deer, elk and bald eagles, while native trout cruise under your board; longer outings include a locally sourced lunch and a short walk to Colorado’s oldest archaeological site.

What the day feels like

What the Day Feels Like

The day is hands‑on and paced: after guided skill drills in a large eddy you push downstream, alternating standing, kneeling, sitting or drifting alongside your board as the canyon narrows. Expect warm air and cool river water, guided coaching throughout, and changing stretches of tranquil float and short, exciting rapids.
