Sunset Suzy’s Group Surf Lessons run out of Hauula on Oahu’s North Shore, where a local instructor has been teaching small groups for more than 15 years. Lessons favor a beautiful, protected cove with small, gentle beginner waves and far fewer people than Waikiki; all boards, leashes and rash guards are provided and sessions are structured for groups rather than crowded, mass-market classes.

What the day feels like

What the lesson feels like

Most lessons run about two hours: a short onshore orientation, fitted rash guards and boards, then instruction and wave practice in a protected beginner break. Instructors keep groups intentionally small so each student gets repeated practice, and you can keep surfing until you’re too tired to continue.

Suitability

Who it's for

Who this works for — and who should plan differently.

1
Active familiesWell suited: group classes accept participants ages 3 and up, so families with young children (meeting the age minimum) can learn together in a protected cove.
2
Friends and small partiesIdeal: lessons are structured for groups of 3–5 people or larger 6+ parties, so friends can book together and avoid feeling lost in a big class.
3
Solo travelersPossible but plan ahead: solo participants can join group lessons, but group lessons require at least three students—if only one or two are confirmed the operator will seek to reschedule or offer a private/semi-private class for an extra fee.
4
Those seeking private instructionAvailable as an option: if a group lesson does not reach the minimum attendance, participants can either be rescheduled into another group or pay extra for a private or semi-private session.
