Planning Your Outing

How long is the drive to the trailhead from Rotorua?

Departing Rotorua we drive for approximately 30 minutes until we reach the base of the Mt Tarawera 4WD track.

What is the condition of the access track?

The ascent includes approximately 8.2 km of bumpy off-road 4WD track; if you suffer from motion sickness tell your guide so they can seat you in the least bumpy part of the vehicle.

Are there toilet facilities on the route?

There is a composting toilet stop at base camp where you can also pick up a walking stick.

What level of fitness is required for the summit?

There is a medium/moderate level of fitness required for the summit track; at a couple of short sections you will need four points of contact for about 50 m, and the scree is a steep 45° slope about 400 m deep.

How high is the summit?

The summit reaches 1111 m.

What should I wear and bring on the hike?

Bring sturdy walking shoes (sturdy trainers are fine), comfortable weather-appropriate clothing, a bottle of water and snacks; no food is provided on the tour.

Is the ground stable underfoot?

Much of the ground is volcanic scoria and can be slippery, so solid footwear and careful footing are required.
