The East Austin Black History Walk moves deliberately through the neighborhood centered on East 11th Street, guiding guests from the African-American Cultural & Heritage Facility through key community sites to the George Washington Carver Complex. Along this one-mile route you’ll encounter institutions, public art and historic buildings while hearing how the City of Austin’s 1928 Master Plan shaped the neighborhood and the lives of its residents.

The tour begins at the African-American Cultural & Heritage Facility and the nearby Dedrick-Hamilton House, where guides explain the beginnings of East Austin’s Black community and the city-led efforts to restore one of the first homes built by a formerly enslaved man.
Charles E. Urdy Plaza Mosaic and Victory Grill on 11th Street
Walking down 11th Street, guests pause at Charles E. Urdy Plaza to view a mosaic honoring Black East Austin and stop at the Historic Victory Grill to hear the venue’s role in Austin’s segment of the Chitlin’ Circuit.
George Washington Carver Complex and Juneteenth Exhibits
The route concludes at the George Washington Carver Complex, where visitors may enter the museum and library to study exhibits on Juneteenth and the City of Austin’s 1928 Master Plan that led to the creation of the so-called 'Negro District.'
