Nightfall on the Salish: Paddleboarding Victoria’s Bioluminescent Bays with South Island SUP.
On warm evenings in spring, summer and fall, South Island SUP leads small-group paddleboard outings from Brentwood Bay to watch marine plankton light up the water. The experience is deliberately accessible — suitable for beginners and all fitness levels — and built around the ephemeral glow that appears as twilight deepens.

Outing Highlights
Plankton-made Night Lights
Ideal conditions in spring, summer and fall bring increased plankton concentrations that can produce striking bioluminescent displays in the water — the central spectacle of the tour.
Accessible, After‑Sunset Paddleboarding
The adventure is designed for all skill and fitness levels, including beginner paddleboarders; lifejackets are provided and must be worn, and swimming ability is not required.
Short, Memorable Evenings
Tours depart around sunset and are relatively brief yet immersive—making them an easy evening addition to a Victoria itinerary.
What the day feels like
What It Feels Like
You meet near Brentwood Bay just after sunset, step onto a board as light drains from the sky, and paddle a short distance into waters that sometimes shimmer with living light—the phosphorescent wake and splashes tracing your path. The whole outing is intentionally relaxed and typically runs about two to two-and-a-half hours from start to finish.
