Frequently asked questions

Planning Your Outing

Which lesson is right for me?

Options include The Surf Experience (2-hour basics), The Surf Course (a three-lesson progressive course plus online theory), Private Lessons (1:1 coaching to advance skills quickly) and children-only classes; private lessons are recommended for surfers who already know the basics or want focused, personalised coaching.

Is learning to surf safe and how deep will we go?

Yes—lessons are run by highly trained, fully qualified lifeguards using safe soft surfboards. Instruction takes place in waist-deep water where participants can stand, and a minimum swimming ability is not required.

What ages do you cater to?

Lessons are available for ages 5 years and up; children should be confident putting their head under a wave and enjoying being in the ocean. Children under 9 must have a parent in the water.

When is the best day or weather to learn?

Most days of the year work well. If surf is small instructors use large boards; if waves are large they stay closer to shore or move to a sheltered beach. Avoid strong-wind days and peak public-holiday beach days for a quieter lesson; overcast days often provide smaller crowds.

How do I book for a group larger than 10 people?

Group bookings are made on request; contact the operator via their group page or email [email protected] with group details to request discounted group prices and availability.

Do I need to pre-book equipment hire?

No—surfboard hire does not require booking as the operator reports ample stock. You can call to check availability or pop into a location during trading hours.

Does Go Ride A Wave have insurance?

Yes—Go Ride A Wave hold $20 million public liability insurance and $5 million professional indemnity; travellers seeking personal accidental cover should arrange their own travel insurance.
