Set in the north of Snowdonia National Park around Ceunant, this five‑day winter skills course uses the Ogwen Valley, the Carneddau and Glyderau, Llanberis Pass and the Snowdon massif as classrooms — mountain days, not classrooms — to develop practical winter mountaineering techniques in real terrain.

Outing Highlights

THE TEAM

Qualified winter instructors and conservative ratios

Instruction is delivered by highly experienced WMCI and WML instructors with a maximum group size of six clients per instructor, ensuring close coaching and tailored feedback throughout the week.

THE TERRAIN

A compact patchwork of classic Snowdonia venues

The northern Snowdonia locations provide a wide choice of easy‑angled ground up to classic winter mountaineering objectives, allowing instructors to match daily venues to the prevailing weather and snow conditions.

THE CURRICULUM

Progressive, mountain‑based winter skills

Across five mountain days you'll practise crampon use, ice‑axe technique and self‑arrest, navigation in poor visibility, snowpack study and avalanche awareness, with practical sessions and full mountain journeys to consolidate skills.

What the day feels like

What the week feels like

Each day begins with weather and avalanche briefings and moves straight into the hills: hands‑on crampon fitting and footwork, route planning and navigation, snow and avalanche awareness, and repeated application of techniques on mountain days — if there is no snow the instructors adapt the programme to concentrate on winter‑specific movement and axe use so every day remains an on‑mountain learning experience.

Suitability

Who it's for

Who this course suits — and who it doesn't.

1
Experienced UK hill walkersAimed at walkers with a fair amount of previous three‑season hill and mountain hiking experience who understand UK mountain ground and weather.
2
Fit, committed learnersRequires a good level of general hiking fitness to undertake repeated mountain days and practical on‑slope skills work.
3
Summer scramblers (Grade 1)Those with some summer grade‑1 scrambling experience will find the progression easier; this background is beneficial but not strictly mandatory.
4
Not for complete beginnersNot suitable for people without prior hill experience — the course expects existing competence in three‑season mountain travel and judgement.

Details to review before reserving

What to bring

You need winter mountaineering clothing and footwear: B2‑rated boots, C2 crampons and a mountaineering axe are recommended; microspikes and non‑crampon‑rated summer 'bendy' boots are not suitable.

Equipment hire

Crampons, ice axe and helmet can be hired from the operator for £10.00 per set per day on five‑day courses (early booking essential); boots are not available to hire from the operator but can be rented via Outdoorhire (operator offers a 10% discount on hire).

Meeting & timing

Courses meet in Llanberis and each mountain day is designed around morning weather and avalanche briefings; individual days are mountain days rather than classroom sessions.

Daily duration

Typical mountain day timing is given as a 6.5‑hour duration, with exact plans adapted each morning to conditions and group objectives.

Frequently asked questions

Planning Your Outing

Do I need previous mountaineering experience?

Yes. You should already have a fair amount of three‑season hill and mountain hiking experience and good general hiking fitness; some summer grade‑1 scrambling experience is advantageous.

What if there is no snow?

Winter conditions in Wales are fickle; if there is no snow the course switches to general mountaineering with a strong focus on winter techniques and on‑mountain practice rather than classroom sessions.

Can I hire crampons, axes and helmets?

Yes. For five‑day courses you can hire a set (crampons, ice axe and helmet) for £10.00 per set per day — early booking is essential.

Are microspikes or summer boots acceptable?

No. Microspikes are not suitable, and bendy summer boots that are not crampon‑rated are unsafe for these courses; boots should be B2 rated where possible.

Can I hire boots from the operator?

The operator does not hire boots; however boots can be hired from Outdoorhire and the operator offers a 10% discount on hire costs.

What are the instructor ratios?

Maximum instructor ratios are six clients to one instructor, provided by highly experienced winter mountaineering staff.
