At Manitoga / The Russel Wright Design Center in Garrison, New York, artist-educator Valerie Light leads a concise, guided drawing program that asks participants to slow down and respond to the modernist House & Studio, Quarry Pool, and surrounding Inner Landscape through observational drawing. The session is designed to welcome people into a hands-on encounter with the site’s landscape and design legacy.

Art as Close Observation
The program is rooted in Russel Wright’s conviction that close observation makes design and art accessible to everyone; the session frames drawing as a way to connect directly with the landscape rather than as an elite practice.
Guided, Gentle Instruction in the Field
Participants receive optional, circulating guidance from the teaching artist while taking up positions in the landscape to observe and draw; the emphasis is on observational practice rather than formal critique.

The making portion of the program unfolds at designated spots in Manitoga’s Inner Landscape—places chosen to orient participants to views of the House & Studio and Quarry Pool before the drawing hour begins.

How the session feels
The two-hour program moves deliberately: a morning check-in at the Guide House is followed by a guided walk up the Quarry Pool Path to orient the group; after a short pause at a Viewspot, guests are dispersed into the landscape with maps and curated materials for an hour of observational drawing while the teaching artist circulates to assist, then the group reconvenes to return supplies and debrief.

The program is a 2-hour morning session that begins with check-in at the Guide House and includes a guided walk, a one-hour drawing period, and a return/debrief.
The teaching artist provides a curated selection of new and upcycled drawing and painting materials (from Retake/Remake) and program maps; participants need not bring specialized supplies.

Can I take photographs while on site?
Yes — photography is permitted while on site, but only with a hand-held device.
Are the interiors of the House & Studio included in this program?
No — the interiors of the House, Studio, and Design Gallery are not included in this experience.
Are there age limits for participants?
Yes — for safety reasons children must be at least 10 years old to attend; infants are not admitted.
Can I bring spray paint or clean brushes in the Quarry Pool?
No — spray paint or other aerosol-based sprays are prohibited, and guests may not dump water or other substances or clean brushes in the Quarry Pool.
Can I bring my dog or therapy animal?
No — pets, emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy dogs are not permitted; only ADA Title III service animals are allowed on site.
Is smoking or playing music allowed?
Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited on site (including the parking lot), and projecting or playing music without personal headphones is not allowed.
