BIG-WATER CONTEXT

Prepare for Lake Superior, the inland sea

The course frames every skill in the context of Lake Superior’s scale and hazards, stressing the judgment needed to decide when to launch and how to read local wildlife and conditions.

CLASSROOM TO FIELD

Practical classroom instruction

Participants receive basics in navigation, route-specific tips, and introductory VHF radio skills before heading onto the water to apply them.

HANDS-ON SKILLS

On-water drills and rescues

On the water, paddlers practice strokes, wet exits, paddle-float self-rescues and the partner T-rescue to build confidence in real conditions.

What the day feels like

What the course feels like

Over three hours split between a classroom at the Bayfield shop and time on the water, the pace alternates focused instruction with practical repetition — briefings on navigation and VHF use followed by guided drills in wetsuits and sea kayaks so skills are practiced immediately.

Suitability
