Whitsunday Island, located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia, boasts two of its greatest highlights: Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. These beaches offer breathtaking scenery, perhaps the closest thing to paradise on Earth, and are among the most beautiful beaches in the world. What are Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet? 1. Whitehaven Beach Stretching approximately 7km, the secret to its reputation as one of the world's most beautiful beaches lies in the composition of its sand. The sand here is made of over 98% silica (silicon dioxide), making it snow-white and incredibly soft. Because it reflects sunlight, it doesn't get hot even in the middle of summer, making it perfect for walking barefoot. 2. Hill Inlet A beautiful cove (tidal channel) located at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. The ebb and flow of the tides cause the pure white silica sand and the seawater, which changes from emerald green to turquoise blue, to mix in a complex way. This creates a breathtaking landscape that changes moment by moment, like a giant marbled painting. Furthermore, from the observation deck (Hill Inlet Lookout) on a slightly elevated hill, you can enjoy an unobstructed panoramic view of the magnificent gradation of colors created by the water and sand. What is the origin of "Whitehaven"? While it's tempting to write "Whiteheaven" because it's like a "white paradise," the correct spelling is "Whitehaven." So why is the word "haven" (refuge, harbor, place of rest) used instead of "heaven"? Origin of the Name This place name was given in 1879 by Edward Bedingfeld, a surveyor and crew member of the British Navy ship "Hercules," which surveyed the area. There are two main theories as to why he named it: 1. From his hometown port town in England: It is widely believed that he named it after Whitehaven, an old port town in Cumbria, England, his hometown, out of affection for the place. 2. From the meaning of "white safe harbor (refuge)": For sailors, "haven" means a "safe anchorage (refuge harbor)" that protects ships from storms. It is said that he named it after seeing the calm and safe cove surrounded by dazzling white sand, feeling that it was "a white haven." As a result, the word "Heaven" is not used, but its beauty is undoubtedly like "heaven" itself! And if you ever come to Australia, I highly recommend visiting Whitehaven Beach so you won't regret it. Also, the aerial views from a seaplane over Hamilton Island offer a different perspective than those from the ground or sea, so I recommend that as well!
