Pristine Paradise: Whitsunday Islands National Park

Whitsunday Island in Australia's Great Barrier Reef is world-famous for its Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, considered among the most beautiful beaches in the world. The name Whitsunday actually originated during the first Pacific voyage (1768-1771) of Captain James Cook, a great British explorer of the 18th century. The historical facts behind the name are described in the logbook of his ship, the HMS Endeavour. Background of the voyage: 1770, to the unknown east coast After completing astronomical observations in Tahiti and surveys of New Zealand, Captain Cook set sail for the "east coast of Australia," which was then unknown to Europeans. In April 1770, the Endeavour reached Botany Bay near present-day Sydney, and continued its relentless northward voyage along the coastline. However, the further north Cook and his crew sailed, the more they encountered the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system—a complex and nightmarish sea area for any navigator. The Moment of the Naming of Whitsunday In early June 1770, the Endeavour entered a calm waterway dotted with beautiful islands. Captain Cook recorded this waterway in his logbook as "Whitsunday's Passage." This is the origin of the name of Whitsunday Island and the entire archipelago. 1. Meaning of the Name "Whitsunday" is the old British name for Pentecost, a movable Christian feast. It falls on the 50th Sunday after Easter and is celebrated as an important holiday in the church. 2. A "Slight Miscalculation" Related to the Date According to Cook's logbook, he passed through this waterway on "Sunday, June 3, 1770 (the very day of Pentecost, or "Whitsunday"). Therefore, it was simply named after the holiday. However, later historians and astronomers recalculated and discovered that Cook and his crew actually passed through on Monday, June 4th. Captain Cook was sailing eastward around the globe, but because the concept of the "International Date Line" didn't exist at the time, the date in his logbook was off by a full day. Despite this discrepancy in calculation, the name "Whitsunday" stuck. The Subsequent Tragedy and Miraculous Escape Immediately after passing through the calm Whitsunday Waterway, Cook and his crew faced the greatest crisis of their voyage. Just a few days after passing Whitsunday, on the night of June 11, 1770, the Endeavour, continuing its northward journey, struck a sharp coral reef (present-day Endeavour Reef) in the darkness and ran aground. A large hole was created in the hull, and water began to flood. Captain Cook calmly dealt with the situation, throwing cannons and other unnecessary items into the sea to lighten the ship, personally operating the pumps and leading a desperate draining operation, and even performing a makeshift repair (a technique called fothering) by placing sailcloth on the outside of the hull to seal the hole with water pressure. Thanks to Captain Cook's crisis management, the Endeavour miraculously avoided sinking. It took refuge in a nearby river (the River Endeavour, which flows through present-day Cooktown) and spent nearly seven weeks repairing the ship before safely returning to England. Incidentally, Captain Cook named the sea route (waterway) "Whitsuday Passage" at the time, but he did not give individual names to the surrounding islands. He simply named the group of islands collectively the "Cumberland Isles," after a British duke. Later, in the 1800s (e.g., 1866), when other British naval survey ships (such as the Salamander) came and created detailed maps, individual island names were given: "Let's call this the largest island next to Whitsunday Passage, which Captain Cook passed through, Whitsunday Island," and "Let's call this island Hamilton Island." At the same time, the highest point on Hamilton Island, overlooking Whitsunday Passage (as named by Captain Cook), was named "Passage Peak." The Whitsundays, through which Captain Cook risked his life and etched his name in his logbook, are now known as a tranquil and beautiful resort town that captivates people from all over the world, completely concealing its history of adventure. However, if you close your eyes and gaze upon the scenery before you, knowing these historical facts, you will surely imagine the historical romance of the Endeavour, commanded by Captain Cook, quietly passing by!
