Fenton Lake’s glassy surface reflects the surrounding Ponderosa pines and rugged mountain backdrop, creating one of the most picturesque paddleboarding locations in New Mexico. The lake is relatively small, covering 37 acres, making it easy to paddle from end to end while soaking in the views. Early mornings are especially breathtaking when the mist rises off the water.

Paddlers often spot bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons soaring overhead, along with mule deer grazing near the shoreline. The lake is also home to various fish species, attracting anglers to the area. Staying quiet while on the water increases the likelihood of encountering wildlife up close.

Fenton Lake State Park offers shaded picnic spots near the water, providing a great place to take a break. The park has basic amenities, including vault toilets and a few picnic tables near the paddle launch area. While no paddleboard rentals are available on-site, visitors should bring their own or rent gear from Albuquerque before making the trip.

Fenton Lake was originally created as a fishing reservoir in the 1940s and has since become a haven for outdoor recreation.

Water temperatures remain cool year-round, so wearing a wetsuit in cooler months is recommended.

Due to its elevation, the weather can change rapidly; mornings may be chilly, while afternoons warm up considerably.

From Albuquerque, take US-550 to NM-4 through Jemez Springs, then turn onto NM-126. Expect a 1.5-to-2-hour drive.
