Okay bike ride but not super well maintained. Stop signs were faded out, and cracks in trail. Considering this is the only rail trail nearby in “Vacationland,” disappointing.

This is approximately 6 miles of mostly level paved walking trail following the west side of the kennebec from Augusta to Gardiner. Most of the trail is handicap accessible and can be accessed by wheelchair. There is one place at Hallowell where the trail crosses the road which would be challenging for less agile people. In this case it may be better to begin the trail past this point and walk the 4 miles remaining. There are many benches and some scenic overlooks spaced along the trail and a porta pottie at the Augusta Trailhead. Parking is ample but the trail is heavily used. Dogs are welcome. This is a great resource and well worth spending a day on when in town.
