About This Adventure Destination

Moraine Lake is a striking glacially-fed lake located in the heart of Banff National Park, in Alberta, Canada. Known for its vivid turquoise waters, the lake is framed by dramatic peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, offering a breathtaking backdrop that distinguishes it as one of the most beautiful natural spots in the Canadian Rockies. The vibrant color of the lake comes from the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited by glacial runoff, making it a truly unique visual experience.

Surrounded by dense forests of spruce and pine, Moraine Lake also features rugged rocky shorelines with fallen logs and clear, shallow waters rich with underwater stones visible to visitors. The distinctive silhouettes of surrounding snow-capped peaks—some reaching over 3,000 meters—provide an awe-inspiring setting that attracts photographers, hikers, and nature lovers year-round.

Moraine Lake gained cultural recognition when it appeared on the back of the Canadian twenty-dollar bill in the 1969 and 1979 series, highlighting its national significance. Established as part of Banff National Park since 1885, this protected area offers not only stunning beauty but also important habitat for local wildlife, including mountain goats and various bird species.

Visitors find the location compelling for its combination of striking alpine scenery, clear blue waters, and peaceful forest trails. This area’s natural grandeur makes it a standout destination for those seeking remarkable landscapes and outdoor adventure in Western Canada, far beyond the usual mountain lake experience.

Editorial Assessment

This location scores highly because of its remarkable natural color, dramatic mountain setting, and well-maintained hiking and paddling opportunities, making it a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers. This is one of many awesome spots in Banff NP. Came here during the Winter and Spring times. Snow was thick and a bit challenging moving around, but the views were spectacular

Prefer Moraine Lake over Lake Louise despite the walking distance. The lakeshore is amazing
