About This Adventure Destination

The Acadia Mountain Trailhead in Mt Desert, Maine, offers a rewarding adventure for visitors seeking genuine coastal and woodland scenery in one spot. Located within the boundaries of Acadia National Park, this trailhead serves as an access point to Acadia Mountain, known for its accessible yet invigorating hike. What sets this destination apart is its impressive vantage points, showcasing Somes Sound—the only fjard on the U.S. eastern seaboard—and sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. These geological formations frame a landscape rich with diverse vegetation, including native pines and hardwoods, that support a variety of local wildlife.

This trail features a mix of forested paths and rocky inclines, leading hikers to the mountain’s summit where panoramic views reward the effort. Sections of the trail include natural granite steps and some steep, scramble-friendly areas that invite a moderate challenge without demanding expert level climbing skills. Though the ascent can feel strenuous in warm weather or for those less acclimated, visitors from children to seniors successfully complete it regularly, marking the trail as suitable for many skill levels. Along the way, hikers gain an appreciation of the park’s natural history, including the significance of its coastal rock formations shaped by glacial activity.

The trail’s loop design offers a smooth descent toward the water’s edge, where cliffs overlook the bay but do not provide direct beach access. The route is often recommended clockwise to handle the steeper climbs earlier. Rich with coastal and mountain scenery, this trail captures a distinctive Maine experience where ocean and forest merge, inviting visitors to enjoy its outdoors and fresh air.

This was my family’s favorite trail at Acadia. It requires moderate to difficult scrambling, especially on the longer route that goes around the backside. The shorter route is still challenging, but easier. Both trails were very fun, and the summit has incredible views. Our kids are 9y/o+ and I chose this trail because it appeared to be less dangerous than the Beehive trail, and it was less crowded than most of the other trails on the Eastern side. If you’re looking for something easier, the Gorham trail was fun and it also had great views.

Absolutely stunning view, one of my favorite panorama views from the trip!! If you’re going counterclockwise on the loop, the section going to the man of war brook outlook was super easy and accessible. After that, the loop got much more difficult and we were doing quite a lot of rock climbing and wish we’d brought more water. Would definitely recommend bringing a lunch for a picnic at the peak it was so beautiful!!
