About This Adventure Destination

Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, located near Bloomfield in New Mexico’s high desert, offers visitors a rare glimpse into an ancient and otherworldly landscape. This vast area is renowned for its unusual geological features, including sharp hoodoos, twisted pinnacles, and colorful caprocks shaped by millennia of wind and water erosion. Composed primarily of sandstone, shale, mudstone, and layers of coal, the formations display a striking palette of reds, blacks, grays, and whites that create a scene unlike anywhere else in the Southwest.

The wilderness spans over 45,000 acres under Bureau of Land Management care, and its remote location ensures solitude and an untouched atmosphere. Along with its dramatic rock structures, the site is significant for paleontologists, as many fossils from the Cretaceous period—around 70 million years old—have been uncovered here. This connection to prehistoric life adds both scientific intrigue and a deep sense of time to the experience.

Visitors encounter an expansive badlands environment with no developed trails, facilities, or services, making preparation essential. The name “Bisti” comes from Navajo language and refers to the area’s “dangerous” or “bad” lands, while “De-Na-Zin” in Navajo means “cranes,” a nod to local wildlife. Under clear desert skies, the play of light and shadow across these sculpted rocks offers endless opportunities for photography and quiet reflection, making this deep wilderness an unforgettable destination for those drawn to raw, natural beauty.

Terrible recommendation Very misleading … it is 11 miles of ruff gravel road to get to a remote parking area that you need high clearance vehicle to get into. Over a 2 mile one way hike, no shade. My opinion not worth the time or drive. Didn’t feel safe hiking in or leaving my truck at the parking area. Would not recommend to anyone.

Bisti is the most alien landscape I've ever walked through in the United States. There are no marked trails, no signs, and almost no other people. You just walk into a massive badlands wilderness full of hoodoos, petrified wood, crumbling sandstone towers, and formations that look like melting sculptures from a fever dream. The silence out there is almost heavy; I remember standing next to a balanced rock the size of a car and hearing absolutely nothing but my own breathing. Bring a GPS device or download offline maps, because getting lost here is a real possibility. Everything looks the same when you turn around, and phone service is nonexistent. I always go in the late afternoon when the shadows stretch long and the colors shift from grey to deep copper and purple. Carry all your water — there is nothing out there.
