About This Adventure Destination

Otter Creek Wilderness, located near Bowden in West Virginia’s mountainous Monongahela National Forest, stands out for its pristine natural setting and peaceful atmosphere. Covering over 8,000 acres, it offers visitors a genuine experience of Appalachia’s forests, rolling hills, and clear, cool waters. The area is especially well-known for Otter Creek itself, a gently flowing stream winding through the landscape and creating inviting spots for fishing and quiet reflection.

This wilderness area showcases well-preserved eastern hardwood forests, rich in maple, oak, and hemlock trees. During autumn, the vivid red and gold leaves transform the area into a colorful paradise. Wildlife is abundant here, including white-tailed deer, black bears, and a variety of songbirds, making it a favored destination for wildlife watchers.

Established in 1975 under the Wilderness Act, Otter Creek Wilderness protects one of the region’s last untouched wild areas, allowing nature to thrive without human interference. Visitors appreciate the trails that cross a mix of terrain—from gentle meadows to rugged ridges—offering both challenge and serenity. The Mylius Trail and the Otter Creek Trail provide routes to experience cascading creek crossings, shaded woodlands, and open ridgelines with sweeping views.

Many who visit describe a deep sense of calm and the joy found in uninterrupted natural beauty. The wilderness is a quiet refuge away from the busier parks of the region, making it an appealing destination for day hikers, anglers, and campers looking for a peaceful outdoor getaway.

Horrible signage on trails. Hiked an extra two hours because they couldn’t be bothered to label the junction of Myluis and Shavers Mountain trails. Someone tell me where the trail signs are in these photos.
