About This Adventure Destination

In the cradle of Pisgah National Forest, the Pink Beds Loop offers a gentle 5-mile journey through a landscape that feels both timeless and ever-changing. Named for the profusion of pink wildflowers—rhododendrons, mountain laurels, and azaleas—that paint the meadows in spring and summer, this trail invites hikers into a serene world of wetlands, hardwood forests, and vibrant blooms.

Trail Overview:

  • Length: 5.1 miles
  • Elevation Gain: Approximately 344 feet
  • Difficulty: Easy; suitable for hikers of all ages and skill levels
  • Trailhead Location: Pink Beds Picnic Area, off US Highway 276

  • Floral Displays: In late spring and early summer, the trail is adorned with pink hues from blooming rhododendrons and mountain laurels.
  • Wetland Ecosystems: The loop traverses unique mountain bogs and wetlands, offering glimpses of beaver activity and diverse plant life.
  • Boardwalks and Bridges: Well-maintained footbridges and boardwalks guide hikers over streams and marshy areas, ensuring a dry and comfortable trek.

Trail Description:

Beginning at the Pink Beds Picnic Area, the trailhead is clearly marked, and the path is easy to follow with orange blazes guiding the way. The loop meanders through flat terrain, making it accessible for families and those seeking a leisurely hike. As you venture deeper, the landscape opens into meadows where wildflowers flourish, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of blossoms. The presence of wetlands and beaver dams has sculpted a diverse habitat, attracting a variety of wildlife and offering serene water vistas.

Directions to Trailhead:

From Brevard, take US Highway 276 North into Pisgah National Forest. After approximately 11.4 miles, turn right into the Pink Beds Picnic Area, located just past the Cradle of Forestry. The trail begins at the back of the picnic area parking lot.

Tips for Hikers:

  • Seasonal Blooms: For the most vibrant floral displays, plan your hike between late May and early July.
  • Trail Conditions: While the path is generally well-maintained, sections can be muddy, especially after rainfall. Waterproof footwear is recommended.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Early morning or late afternoon hikes increase the chances of observing local wildlife, including beavers and various bird species.

We only did the left side of the loop. The boardwalk was turned on its side and there was a large tree down on the trail.

Nice trail, can choose to do a short mid or long hike. We chose the orange (mid) hike trail, but saw a black bear near the end and turned around to walk the long way back to the parking lot. It was an adventure indeed. You hike over a few small streams, nothing you can't step or hop over. All in all, it is a peaceful hike.

Not well marked and lots of mud. Most of the trail has roots.
