About This Adventure Destination

Located in the Madeira region, PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço offers a dramatic and unforgettable coastal landscape. This trail captivates visitors with its striking cliffs, azure seas, and unique geological formations. Renowned for its rugged beauty, this area presents a contrast to Madeira's lush interiors, with sparse vegetation and distinctive volcanic rock that tell tales of an ancient landscape. This headland is the easternmost point of Madeira and offers uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean, creating a serene yet exhilarating experience for hikers.

The trail is approximately 7 kilometers round trip and is suitable for moderately experienced hikers. As you traverse the paths, you may encounter native plant species such as maritime fennel and everlasting daisies. Keep an eye out for local fauna too; the Madeiran wall lizard is commonly seen basking in the sun. The area is part of the Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Park, ensuring the protection of its unique ecosystem.

Historically, the name 'São Lourenço' is derived from a ship belonging to João Gonçalves Zarco, an early discoverer of the island. The untouched beauty here gives a glimpse into the natural state of the earth before modern development. This nature walk endows visitors with both a sense of peace and an appreciation for the raw, unspoiled beauty of Madeira's coastline.

Wonderful trek, every inch of it. Completely in the sunlight, so sunscreen and a hat are a must, especially on sunny days. Parking starts at the start of the trek and extends along the entire road. At 2:30 PM, I parked on the side of the road, a five-minute walk away, because there were no free parking spaces. It's very busy, but well distributed.

We did not take to PR hike, we drove up with the car. There was free parking. So not much walking. At the viewpoint you see spectacular views. In my opinion, one of the greatest at the island.
