The campground was spacious and well maintained. The beach and trails are nice. We are booked to stay from sept 5 to Sept 9 but are leaving after only 2 nights. The gnats are awful along with the flies that continually bite. We can’t let our dog out of the camper for long periods of time due to this. We can’t be outside ourselves because of this. It is obvious that this is an ongoing problem when you see the staff driving around with nets over their heads to keep the gnats away from their face. Almost every campsite has a canopy with screens around them. Only wish we would have known before coming to the campsite so we could’ve come prepared or canceled altogether

The concrete World War 2 ships are pretty cool to see. Also saw dolphins swimming around. The biting flies are ridiculous thought.

I have been going to Kipoteke State Park for decades it feels like and I am from the Richmond VA area. The family and I have enjoyed years of crabbing, fishing and swimming here! Beaches were always so beautiful! I’ve always said this beach was natures gift to us! Perfect getaway from the city life and to be at a beach preferably that isn’t the horrible vibes of “ VA Beach” hustle and bustle of crazy tourists and rude young adults. But I recently went this year (Sept 2026) and it has changed drastically. I understand tides, but even at low tides, the beautiful sandy beach Im familiar with was barely there on both the swimming side and fishing/crabbing side (fishing pier). Plus the debris of sticks and sea debris on the fishing/crabbing side was so thick. Hard to enjoy walking to the water as it was everywhere. The bathroom area was horrible. Only one side of the rinse off area worked and the side that did worked, the water was clogged so it pooled at your ankles. Kinda of gross to try and rinse off with other stranger’s rinse off at you ankles. Then the worst of it all - The BITING STABLE FLIES - OMG! They were EVERYWHERE! And were on full attack mode. Hundreds of them! You couldn’t even enjoy laying or sitting in the beach. Them suckers were biting so bad my babies were screaming and crying! They hurt!! We drove hours to enjoy a place we have loved forever to literally leave a little over an hour. Crazy work.

The sites are well maintained. The bathrooms are exceptionally clean and regularly kept. Beaches and sunset are extraordinary. Great crabbing and quaint town of Cape Charles close by to visit and shop WE LOVE KIPTOPEKE
