Hiking Lion’s Head was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Cape Town! If you enjoy being outdoors, getting some exercise and experiencing incredible scenery, this is a hike that should absolutely be on your list. The trail itself is a fantastic experience because the views start almost immediately. As you make your way up, you get spectacular 360-degree views of Cape Town, Table Mountain, Signal Hill, the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coastline. The higher you climb, the more impressive the scenery becomes, and there are plenty of places to stop for a breather and take some amazing photographs. The hike is challenging in places, especially as you get closer to the summit. There are sections with steep rocks, chains and ladders where you need to use your hands and take a little more care. That is part of what makes reaching the top so rewarding, though. It feels like a real adventure rather than simply walking up a paved track. Once you reach the summit, the views are absolutely incredible. Looking down over Cape Town and the ocean from the top gives you a completely different appreciation of how beautiful the city really is. It is one of those moments where you can stop, catch your breath and just take everything in. We really enjoyed the atmosphere along the trail as well. There were people of all ages and fitness levels enjoying the hike, and everyone seemed to share the same excitement about reaching the top. It has a great outdoor and adventurous feeling without needing to travel far from the city. I would recommend allowing plenty of time to enjoy the hike rather than rushing to the summit. Take water, wear proper walking shoes, protect yourself from the sun and take regular breaks to enjoy the views. The weather can also change quickly, so it is worth checking conditions before heading up. For us, Lion’s Head was much more than just a hike. It was a proper Cape Town experience — fresh air, exercise, incredible scenery, a bit of adventure and some unforgettable views. Standing at the top and looking across Cape Town, Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean was absolutely worth the effort. It is a hike that gives you a real sense of achievement when you reach the summit. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Cape Town who enjoys nature, hiking and a bit of adventure. One of those experiences you will remember long after you leave.
