About This Adventure Destination

Located in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, the Cirque of the Towers is an extraordinary destination renowned for its dramatic granite peaks and alpine lakes. This natural amphitheater of towering rock spires stands out among the region’s wilderness for its sheer vertical cliffs, some rising more than 1,000 feet, attracting outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate its rugged beauty and challenging terrain. The Cirque offers spectacular sights where deeply carved granite walls meet vibrant wildflower meadows and clear mountain waters.

These peaks, including the iconic Pingora Peak and Wolf’s Head, were forged over millions of years, their surfaces polished and cracked, perfect for climbers seeking both technical ascents and unforgettable views. The area’s ecology includes lush subalpine forests and pockets of rare alpine flora, providing habitat for marmots, pikas, and occasional mountain goats. Visitors often spot these animals amid the steep granite faces or beside tranquil lakes like Shadow and Lonesome.

This region lies within public lands that promote conservation alongside recreation, making the Cirque an ideal destination for those wishing to engage deeply with Wyoming’s wilderness. The demanding access routes and variable weather require preparation, but the reward is a remote wilderness experience offering peace, challenge, and breathtaking scenery. Camping near the lakes gives visitors a rare chance to gaze at a dazzling night sky far from city lights.

Few places combine geological wonder with outdoor opportunities as fully as the Cirque of the Towers. Whether through hiking, climbing, or simply appreciating the rugged landscape, this majestic site offers an unforgettable glimpse of Wyoming’s wild heart.

The Cirque is breathtaking, and the hike in from the north was also really beautiful. Camped at shadow lake, which was amazing, and then a couple nights inside the Cirque, by Lonesome Lake. The weather inside the Cirque varied wildly: in a 12 hour period, we experienced rain, thunderstorms with hail, 70F sun, and then snow (first week of September). Totally worth it. The hike out was great, too.

Was a great experience to hike this loop with my son. At times the high part of trail is tough to make out even with just patchy snow. Overall it was a great first trail for my son to backpack!
