I took the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to the Needleton stop and hiked into Chicago Basin with three 14ers waiting: Sunlight, Windom, and Eolus. The train drops you at the wilderness boundary and leaves. No road access. No crowds past the first mile. Two nights in the basin and I covered more vertical than I'd done in years. The most Colorado thing I've ever done.

So pristine and full of life. The air and water stew magic. The time spent on my horse Puncher was unforgettable.

Phenomenal view from the northern overlook. Be sure to speak “hello” loudly and then listen for the echo.
