About This Adventure Destination

Devils River State Natural Area is a true wilderness retreat located near Del Rio in Southwest Texas. Known for its pristine waters and striking landscapes, this protected area showcases one of Texas’s clearest rivers, flanked by towering limestone cliffs and rugged canyons. It stands out in the region for its remote access and well-preserved natural environment, offering visitors a rare chance to connect with a largely untouched ecosystem. The river’s spring-fed, turquoise waters flow through semi-arid terrain, creating a vibrant habitat for wildlife like beavers, armadillos, and a variety of bird species.

The landscape features dramatic river canyons with thick vegetation lining the crystal-clear stream, which contrasts sharply with the surrounding dry hills and chaparral. Visitors will find the area’s geology notable for its smooth limestone formations, some soaring 200 feet high along Dolan Creek Road, providing breathtaking views and photo opportunities. The combination of aquatic and terrestrial environments supports rare plant life and diverse animal species, making it an ecological gem.

Historically, this area holds cultural significance with ancient Native American pictographs visible on canyon walls, adding a layer of human history to the natural beauty. Established as a state natural area, it prioritizes conservation and low-impact recreation, preserving the remote wilderness feeling. Visitors often remark on the peacefulness enhanced by the park’s dark sky designation, which offers excellent conditions for stargazing.

Accessible by a long dirt road, Devils River State Natural Area requires preparation but rewards visitors with a unique setting far removed from city noise. It’s ideal for those seeking quiet, wildlife sightings, and water activities. The limited number of campsites with no hookups encourages self-sufficiency and respect for the pristine environment, making it a standout destination in Texas’s outdoor landscape.

The river access trail is very short and the water is inexplicably cloudy all along the areas river frontage. That’s right, the “clearest water in Texas” is not at all clear; it’s loaded with turtles and almost no fish because it’s filled with a white cloudy silt of some kind. Such a tiny river trail (and rangers insist you stay on the trails) means that every single person who visits will see each other..so your traveling to a very remote area to hike a tiny stretch of cloudy river with a bunch of other folks on top of you. There is a long 12 mile loop trail in the area but it’s not near the river so basically a desert chaparral where you will see vultures and a few other scraggly gray animals in the scorching heat. I drove here from SA and it was a huge let down…a very over-hyped river from what I experienced. Barb was nice in the ranger office

Absolutely amazing! Getting there from the highway takes about 45 minutes on a dirt road. Sites 6-8 may need 4x4/High clearance, so be prepared. No water or electricity at the campsites, so be prepared. The park staff is friendly and takes pride in the park. Make sure to pack out whatever you pack in. There are no dumpsters in the park. Absolutely peaceful and clean with an abundance of wildlife! Dark sky designation, limited availability of sites, and the quiet were the perfect place for a restorative weekend.
