About This Adventure Destination

For hikers seeking a peaceful yet challenging adventure through the New River Gorge, the Fayetteville Trail offers a perfect mix of solitude, scenery, and history. This 4.7-mile out-and-back trail winds through dense forest, past rugged cliffs, and along remnants of the area’s rich cultural heritage, making it an immersive escape into the heart of Appalachia.

Starting near the Wolf Creek Park trailhead, the trail plunges quickly into the forest, where the air is thick with the aroma of pine and earth. Early on, the path crosses small creeks and winds through groves of rhododendrons that bloom in a riot of color during the spring. The terrain is diverse, with stretches of soft dirt giving way to rocky inclines, making this trail a satisfying challenge for intermediate hikers.

One of the Fayetteville Trail’s standout features is its quiet beauty. You’ll encounter towering hardwoods, patches of ferns, and occasional clearings that offer fleeting views of the surrounding cliffs. Along the way, listen for the calls of birds overhead or the rustling of deer slipping through the underbrush.

For history buffs, the trail’s link to the area’s mining and railroading past adds another layer of interest. Signs of old railroad grades and mining operations are scattered along the way, subtle reminders of the industrious past that once thrived in these woods.

The trail culminates at a junction with the Long Point Trail, offering a rewarding vista of the New River Gorge Bridge. For those seeking an extended adventure, continuing to Long Point is an option, but even as a standalone hike, the Fayetteville Trail delivers a deeply rewarding experience. It’s a trail that whispers rather than shouts, offering quiet moments of reflection and connection with nature.

More like a national forest than a national park. Campgrounds are poorly marked and under developed. Amtrak and freight trains frequently traverse the park. Getting from one point in to another often entails leaving the park. There are many spots that have private property within its boundaries - I’ve never seen that in a NP. It might be ok if you live nearby or passing through, but overall, if you’ve been to the Smokys, Glacier, Yosemite, etc., you’ll realize it just isn’t up to NP standards.
