I spent a half day at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center exploring the botanical gardens and surrounding desert trail network and came away with a sharper understanding of the Chihuahuan Desert than years of driving through it had given me. The trails extend into genuine desert terrain beyond the garden areas with the Davis Mountains visible above the surrounding grassland. I saw more bird species in a single morning here than anywhere else in the Trans-Pecos. The center sits close enough to Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory to anchor a full day of varied outdoor experiences in the area.

I'd been wanting to visit the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center for years, and I finally had the chance to bring my son for an early morning hike. It was absolutely worth the wait. We practically had the trails to ourselves, which made the experience even more peaceful. Along the way, we saw an incredible variety of unique cacti, insects, and animal scat, making it a fun and educational outing. The views of West Texas and the Davis Mountains are absolutely stunning and well worth the visit. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and made sure we had everything we needed before we set out on the trails. My only constructive feedback is that the trail markers are somewhat sparse, and some of the trail signs are weathered and difficult to read. Aside from that, this place is a true hidden gem. I can't wait to come back.

I can't race enough about the hard work and fabulous results of this Botanical Garden! The native cacti are so well marked, and it's a wonderful place to wander the trails and experience West Texas' beautiful succulents, plants and trees! It was a very spiritual experience for me, a senior native Texan!
