About This Adventure Destination

Charlies Bunion is a striking rock outcrop located in the Great Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Situated along the historic Appalachian Trail, this landmark is one of the most memorable viewpoints in the park, offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. What makes Charlies Bunion truly unique is its rugged, exposed rock ledge that contrasts dramatically with the dense forest that surrounds it. At an elevation of nearly 6,200 feet, the site provides a clear perspective of the mountains’ contours that change with the seasons—from vibrant autumn leaves to a snow-blanketed winter scene.

The name "Charlies Bunion" originated from a hiker’s swollen foot, adding a lighthearted story to this natural feature. The outcrop itself is composed primarily of Precambrian sandstone, shaped by millions of years of erosion, giving it a jagged, almost otherworldly appearance. Hikers will find this location rewarding not only for its geological interest but also for the rich biodiversity of the area. Visitors often spot white-tailed deer and a variety of native plants along the trail.

Charlies Bunion’s position within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most visited and ecologically rich parks in the United States, enhances its appeal. The hike to this viewpoint, roughly 8 miles round trip from Newfound Gap, attracts those seeking a moderately challenging trek paired with exceptional natural beauty. The site’s grandeur and accessibility make it a standout destination in the Tennessee Smokies, offering an unforgettable outdoor experience to those who visit.

Editorial Assessment

Did this hike after a storm hit the afternoon before and we got an early start at 7:30 a.m., so it was quite cool. The path is well-marked and maintained and it’s a nice hike through woods (most of the time). It was foggy/cloudy, so when we got to Charlie’s Bunion there was virtually no view. It took us about 5.5 hours at a very moderate speed from the parking lot and back. Parking lot at the trailhead is quite big, so finding a spot shouldn’t be a problem.
