About This Adventure Destination

Located near the small city of Grace in southeastern Idaho, Niter Ice Cave is a fascinating natural formation carved by ancient lava flows. Unlike many caves, this one is formed within a volcanic lava tube, creating an expansive underground passage with towering ceilings and rugged rock walls. This natural shelter remains cool year-round, allowing ice to persist inside the cave even during summer months, which is a rare feature in this region. The cave’s chilly interior contrasts sharply with the grassy fields and rolling hills above, providing visitors a distinctive experience of temperature and texture.

Visitors will notice the large, rugged boulders scattered through the cave and the uneven floor, which require careful navigation. The site offers a glimpse into volcanic geology and the forces that shaped this landscape centuries ago. While the cave is spacious enough to stand upright in most parts, some areas require climbing over fallen rocks, adding a mild challenge and a sense of adventure.

Although the cave is a popular local attraction, it remains relatively off the beaten path compared to famous national parks. Its natural ice formations and the sheer scale of the lava tube make it stand out among Idaho’s outdoor spots. The cave was formed thousands of years ago during volcanic activity in the region, adding a layer of ancient geological history.

Rich in natural beauty and geological significance, Niter Ice Cave offers visitors a cool escape and a chance to witness a volcanic phenomenon rarely found in the area. It’s a compelling destination for those interested in nature’s wonders and the forces that shape our planet.

Editorial Assessment

Niter Ice Cave offers a distinctive natural experience with its volcanic formation and persistent interior ice, providing visitors a cool contrast to Idaho’s warmer seasons. While unique and regionally significant, it remains less known internationally and less accessible than top-tier natural landmarks. Its moderate difficulty and limited amenities earn it a solid rating as an engaging outdoor destination, especially for geology enthusiasts and hikers seeking something off the beaten path.

Stunning and Peaceful, But One Heads-Up To our surprise, the place was completely empty when we arrived—truly in the middle of nowhere. Formation Cave is one of the larger caves we’ve been to, with so much open space inside and very cold temperatures, so dress accordingly. One thing to be aware of: someone defaced the entrance with a drawing that’s a bit inappropriate. It might be awkward if you’re bringing kids, so check the photos beforehand. Hopefully, it gets cleaned up soon, because otherwise, this is an incredible and underrated spot. We’ll definitely be back.

We really enjoyed exploring this cave as a family. We did not know much before we went so we were not prepared. It is fairly long and dark so take a flashlight. It was very muddy but hadn’t rained recently so I assume it is always muddy. It was a really fun cave formed by a lava tube. It is tall and wide for most of it so you can stand up straight. There are some rocks that require climbing over. My niece who is 6 was able to do it using the lights from other people.

It was cool, but I was a little scared in it but that's just me. My husband loved it

It's quite muddy and that there are some offensive things spray painted on the walls but if you come prepared for that and don't read the walls it is a rather pleasant experience
