Mombacho's Majestic Peaks

Great destination! Enjoyed the open trail and peaceful outdoor atmosphere.

It was very foggy when we were there (which is, after all, a key feature of the volcano). Because of this, we had no view of the crater, Granada, Isletas, etc. They also advised us against the two guided tours, as these are worthwhile primarily for the more spectacular views. These tours cost extra. We did the only self-guided tour. Including detours to all the viewpoints (where you can't see anything in the fog...) and the fumaroles, it was about 2.5 km and took 52 minutes with stops (42 minutes of walking time). You can drive up yourself (4x4 is mandatory). This costs USD 25 per vehicle. Or you can take the shuttle for USD 20 per person. There's also an entrance fee of USD 2 per person. The shuttle runs four times a day (8:30, 10:30, 13:00, and 14:30). You pay for all of this at the entrance at the foot of the volcano. There's a toilet (3 out of 6 were open when we were there), a very small museum without much information, and theoretically a small shop, which was closed. Bringing your own water and snacks is recommended.

A truly wonderful experience. However, it's quite expensive ($20-25 USD per person) to drive up in a 4x4 and then hike a 2km trail. There's an additional cost for hiking further. That said, the guide accompanies you and explains many things during the hike, which is very pleasant. The view is magnificent and comparable to views from a multi-hour hike, so for a little effort, the reward is well worth it!

A beautiful place, where you can breathe nature. I've done all 3 tours, from the shortest to the longest, and although the longest one is tiring, it's well worth it, you enjoy it.
