About This Adventure Destination

Plateau Point is a remarkable lookout located within the Grand Canyon region of northern Arizona. This destination offers visitors an unforgettable view from the Tonto Platform, a mid-elevation terrace that sits about 500 feet above the Colorado River. Known for its sweeping, unobstructed vistas, Plateau Point provides an exceptional perspective on the canyon’s layered rock formations and the river’s winding path below without requiring a full descent to the canyon floor. It’s a favorite spot for those wanting a striking panorama combined with a moderate day hike experience.

Hikers reach Plateau Point via the well-maintained Bright Angel Trail, passing through Indian Garden Campground before heading 1.5 miles on flat ground across the Tonto Plateau. The trail showcases the diverse geology of the canyon, including sculpted sandstone cliffs and the ancient Vishnu Schist visible near the river’s edge. Along the way, travelers will encounter desert flora such as prickly pear cacti and wildflowers as well as native wildlife like mule deer, often seen calmly grazing nearby.

Adding historical depth, the area is part of Grand Canyon National Park, established in 1919, which preserves this natural wonder and its environment. The viewpoint itself includes a sturdy railing to ensure safety while soaking in views of Granite Gorge and the river below. A hike here offers not just visual delight but a tangible connection to the vast geological story and natural beauty that spans millions of years in this iconic landscape.

Plateau Point is perfect for those seeking a rewarding hike combined with spectacular scenery in one of America’s most famous natural landmarks.

The trail is well worth the effort. However, it's only suitable for experienced hikers with excellent equipment. It's a 3.5-hour hike there and a 4.5-hour hike back; 5 miles each way. There are water and restrooms every 1.5 miles. Be sure to bring plenty of water and energy snacks. The weather can change quickly, so check the forecast.

The Plateau Point Hike via Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon is outstanding. At the Plateau Point it offers a stunning, nearly 360-degree panoramic view deep into the canyon and excellent vistas of the Colorado River below. The trail is well-maintained and not overly steep. Water sources are available at regular intervals along the Bright Angel Trail. What makes the hike challenging is the distance of about 20km, the 1000m ascend back to the rim on second half of the trail, and the intense heat during summertime especially on the lower plateau. Experienced hikers should have no problem completing the round trip (from/to Bright Angel Trail head) in 5–6 hours, including time for photos and soaking in the views. Highly recommended for its incredible scenery and solid trail conditions - one of the highlights of my trip to Arizona!

Incredible hike! We went down into the canyon for about 1.5 hours (reached the first rest stop) and got some amazing photos. We didn't have the chance to go all the way to Plateau Point due to time constraints, but I highly recommend this trail. For reference, there are rest stops at the 1.5-mile, 3-mile, and 4.5-mile marks, with Plateau Point 6 miles down. ⚠️ Things to keep in mind: Water: Carry plenty of it! Gear: Bring torch lights/headlamps. Conditions: The trail can get a little dusty. Pacing: Remember you have to climb back up the elevation. It's the most difficult part, so save your energy!
