To truly earn Sassafras Mountain, start from the Foothills Trail access on US 178 near Rocky Bottom, not the summit parking lot. There is a small roadside parking area by the Foothills Trail sign; from there, cross the highway and follow the white blazes toward Sassafras. My route came out to roughly 9.8 miles round trip with about 2,200 feet of climbing. The trail is quieter and more rugged than the drive-up summit suggests, with narrow sections, roots, wooden steps, storm damage, and enough rolling terrain that the return trip is not entirely downhill. I was drenched for most of the ascent, which made a few sections slick and mildly sketchy, but the clouds broke just in time to deliver beautiful summit views. Start early, download your map (AllTrails) before arriving, expect limited cell service and parking, and bring solid footwear, plenty of water, and patience after rain. It is a challenging but very manageable hike, and a far more satisfying way to experience South Carolina’s high point than simply stepping out of a car at the top.
