There isn't much here relative to other National Forests. The trails are underwhelming. I greatly prefer the forests in Western NC, such as Pisgah.

Croatan National Forest was a wonderful surprise. If you're looking for solitude and a true escape into nature, this is the place. The trails were well marked, yet lightly traveled, allowing parts of the forest to remain pleasantly overgrown, which only added to the feeling of adventure. One of the highlights was discovering what appeared to be bear tracks pressed into the pristine white sand. The forest offered an impressive variety of trees, including beautiful bald cypress, making the scenery constantly interesting. My four-mile hike turned out to be far more enjoyable than I expected. Peaceful, wild, and refreshingly untouched, Croatan National Forest is a place I'll gladly return to.

It is best to enter at the a island creek entrance that has 3 loops. We did 1 loop 4 years ago and just did yellow and orange this week. Moderate challenge, beautiful area.
