(This Review is for portion of the trail from Halibut cove Lagoon to China Poot Lake; Coalition Loop trail from China Poot Bay was impassable during 2025, and likely for sometime to come; we tried from China Poot Lake and found it truly impassable). The trail is so beautiful with many berries along the way (mid/late August). It's fairly steep in places but interspersed with moderate, & a few easy sections (it's borderline moderate/hard in difficulty, depending on how recently the trail has been cleared). We managed it with full packs (including one 11yo with minimal to moderate backpack experience). The trail had been recently cleared, thanks to Kachemak Bay Park Volunteers. We didn't see any black bears, but other hikers reported seeing a mother & 2 cubs along the creek/gravel bed area. We encountered a few other hikers, but not many. Saw lots of Moose sign in trail around China Poot Lake. Fishing in the lake was fair for small trout, enough to have a handful for dinner. It's a beautiful area, but can be windy. The China Poot Lake cabin was great, but the campsite would also be a nice option (well sheltered but still close to a half-way decent beach on a beautiful part of the lake. A few of our group did the China Poot peak hike, and found it intensely steep and very difficult to traverse (and somewhat overgrown, but made for a memorable and rugged adventure. Would love to come back some day!

Halibut Cove is a wonderful peninsula community in the Homer area. Actually, the entire area, just like Alaska itself, is a huge park with amazing wildlife, wonderful view and great people.
