About This Adventure Destination

Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is a captivating natural retreat located in Homosassa, Florida. Renowned for its clear, spring-fed waters and diverse wildlife, this park offers visitors an exceptional chance to observe Florida’s native animals in their natural habitats. The main feature is the crystal-clear Homosassa Springs, one of the 33 first-magnitude springs in Florida, where water flows at a rate of approximately 100 million gallons a day, creating a vibrant underwater ecosystem. The park is especially popular for its populations of manatees, which gather during cooler months when the spring’s warm waters offer refuge from the chilly Gulf currents. Visitors can also see alligators, black bears, bobcats, deer, and over 200 species of birds, making it a prime site for nature lovers and photographers. The park’s history dates back to the 1800s when the springs were a favorite spot for tourists and locals alike, adding cultural significance to its natural charm. Walking trails and underwater viewing areas provide an immersive way to experience the flora and fauna up close. The park’s dedication to wildlife preservation and education through live animal presentations and a small museum adds a rich learning dimension. This spot stands out in the region due to its blend of ecological richness, unique aquatic environment, and commitment to conservation, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in Florida’s natural heritage and wildlife observation.

Editorial Assessment

This location receives a solid rating for its unique natural spring environment and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly for manatees. While it is a well-loved regional treasure with significant ecological importance, it does not have the distinct geological uniqueness or international recognition of the top natural landmarks. Its appeal is strongest for wildlife enthusiasts and those interested in freshwater ecosystems.

There is NO fresh water spring at this location. However, there is a nice paved walking trail through the wilderness that's just over 2 miles round-trip. Also, the restaurant overlooking the springs is still closed until further notice.
