For anyone looking to escape the crowds and find a truly peaceful spot to kayak, fish, or just cruise, this is the perfect destination. ​Taking a small boat down the various tributaries is a great way to explore, but do not underestimate how easy it is to get lost in this labyrinth. The winding maze of creeks can turn anyone around quickly. The water also gets choppy for smaller boats as you approach the Gulf, so knowing when to turn back is vital. ​This river system is fed by over a dozen springs. Some of the most notable ones you might encounter include: ​Chassahowitzka Main Spring: Located at the head of the river near the boat ramp. ​Seven Sisters Springs: A popular cluster of interconnected spring vents and underwater caves. ​The Crack: A secluded, famous sulfur spring named for the 30 foot long geological fissure in the riverbed. ​Crab Creek Spring: A beautiful, shallow spring run. ​Baird Springs: A series of limestone openings. ​Potters Creek Spring and Salt Creek Spring: Smaller springs that contribute to the river unique ecosystem. ​A very important safety note regarding the underwater caves here: in recent years, a memorial sign was placed by a family at one of the springs to honor an experienced local who lost their life exploring those dangerous underwater systems.
