Kuliouou Valley, East Oahu

Approximately 4.7 miles round trip with 1,800 feet of elevation gain

Easily accessible via Kuliouou Road, ending at a public parking area

The hike begins on a dirt and root-covered path through a forested area, transitions into pine groves, and ascends to an exposed ridge.

At the summit, hikers are rewarded with a sweeping vista of Kailua, Hawaii Kai, and the Ko’olau Mountain Range.

Expect to see Ohia trees, Uluhe ferns, and native birds like the Apapane and ‘I’iwi singing in the canopy.

The lower portion features a long section of switchbacks that help ease the steep ascent.

Several paths have small wooden benches allowing hikers to take a break and enjoy the surroundings.

The last segment is a steep staircase ascent leading directly to the summit, where strong winds add excitement to the experience.

Kuliouou means "sounding knee" in Hawaiian, possibly referencing the echoes of wind through the valley.

Keep an eye out for Jackson’s Chameleons hiding in foliage and Hawaiian Honeycreepers fluttering through the trees.

Mornings for cooler temperatures and clearer summit views. Avoid late afternoons to prevent hiking in the dark.

Plenty of water (minimum 2 liters per person)

Rain jacket, as weather can change quickly

From Honolulu, take H1 East to Kalanianaole Highway, turn left on Kuliouou Road, and follow it to the end. 20-30 minutes from Waikiki.
