Keep reading to discover some of the best moderate hiking trails that combine adventure, natural beauty, and a healthy challenge.

1. Robert H. Treman State Park: The Rim and Gorge Trail Loop

Distance: Approximately 8 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Drive Time from Ithaca: ~10 minutes (4.5 miles southwest via NY-96B S)

The Rim and Gorge Trail Loop in Robert H. Treman State Park is a quintessential Finger Lakes hiking experience. This approximately 8-mile loop meanders through the dramatic Enfield Glen gorge, taking hikers past 12 waterfalls including the awe-inspiring Lower Falls (Lucifer Falls), a 115-foot cascade that’s considered one of the region’s most iconic sights.

What Makes It Unique?

  • The trail combines two paths: the Rim Trail, which provides panoramic views from above the gorge, and the Gorge Trail, where you'll walk along the picturesque creek bed, often with mist from the water cooling your hike.
  • The park's gorge was shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago, leaving behind dramatic cliffs and a series of plunge pools.

Things to Know Before You Go:

  • Trail Highlights: Swimming is allowed at the base of Lower Falls (seasonal, lifeguard on duty), so pack your swimsuit in summer!
  • Local Knowledge: Keep an eye out for the wooden bridge crossings and stone staircases—they’re photogenic and provide access to some of the most beautiful overlooks.
  • Footwear Tip: Sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes are highly recommended due to wet and uneven terrain on the Gorge Trail.

This park offers facilities such as restrooms, picnic areas, and ample parking, making it convenient for full-day excursions.

2. Buttermilk Falls State Park: Lake Treman and Gorge Trail Loop

Distance: ~7.5 to 8 miles (multiple connected loops)
Difficulty: Moderate
Drive Time from Ithaca: ~5 minutes (2.5 miles south via NY-13 S)

Buttermilk Falls State Park offers a splendid mix of trails, and a recommended 8-mile option combines the Lake Treman Loop with sections of the Gorge Trail. This route takes hikers from the park’s entrance at the lower falls to the quieter, less-visited upper park areas, including Lake Treman and its surrounding forest.

Interesting Features Along the Trail:

  • Buttermilk Falls: Named for the frothy, churning water that resembles buttermilk. The falls are located near the trailhead, making for an impressive start to your hike.
  • Historical Context: The park's stone bridges and other structures date back to the 1930s when they were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, adding a sense of history to your hike.
  • Wildlife: Spot deer, wild turkeys, and even red foxes in the quiet upper sections.

Insider Tips:

  • If you visit in the spring, the falls are at their most powerful due to snowmelt.
  • Summer hikers should come early, as the lower falls area can get crowded.
  • For photographers, sunset views near Lake Treman are especially striking.

3. Finger Lakes Trail (Bespoke Section from Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area)

Distance: 8-9 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Drive Time from Ithaca: ~25 minutes (15 miles west via NY-79 W)

The Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) is a long-distance hiking route that stretches over 950 miles across the state. A particularly picturesque and moderate 8-mile section can be hiked in the Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area. This remote area offers a chance to immerse yourself in nature while avoiding the more tourist-heavy parks.

Notable Features of This Section of the FLT:

  • Geological Points of Interest: This route showcases deep ravines, old-growth forests, and scenic vistas of the surrounding countryside.
  • Wildlife Haven: As the largest wildlife management area in the region, it's home to diverse species like bald eagles, black bears, and elusive bobcats.
  • Local History: In the mid-1800s, Connecticut Hill was known for its small farming communities. Relics of old farmland can still be spotted along the trail.

Recommendations for Hikers:

  • Bring Navigation Tools: The FLT runs through wooded areas where trails can intersect, so bring a trail map or use AllTrails for GPS backup.
  • Seasonal Observation: This area is particularly enchanting in the fall, with fiery foliage offering classic Finger Lakes autumn scenery.

Expect a peaceful atmosphere with fewer hikers—perfect if you're looking for solitude.

4. Taughannock Falls State Park: North Rim and South Rim Trail Combo

Distance: 7.5-8 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Drive Time from Ithaca: ~20 minutes (9 miles northwest via NY-89 N)

Famed for Taughannock Falls, a 215-foot waterfall that plunges deeper than Niagara, this park offers a rewarding 8-mile hike when you combine the North Rim Trail and South Rim Trail. This loop encircles the gorge and provides both top-down and creek-level views of the falls.

What’s Special About This Trail?

  • The falls themselves are the tallest single-drop waterfall in the eastern United States.
  • The trails run parallel to Taughannock Creek, with many scenic overlooks and bridges offering photo opportunities.
  • Informational plaques along the way share details about the area's fascinating geology and ecology.

Additional Notes for Visitors:

  • The park has ample parking and a visitor center with exhibits about the Finger Lakes region.
  • Weather Tip: Ice buildup in winter transforms the falls into a spectacular frozen cascade, so this trail is worth revisiting during colder months!
  • Dogs are welcome on a leash, making it a pet-friendly choice.

Limited trails during the winter season but it's still a beautiful park to visit. The gorge trail does close for the season.

Easily my favorite state park in the finger lakes. I have also camped on site, and hike through with kiddos; highly recommend.
