About This Adventure Destination

Spooky Slot Canyon, located just outside Kanab in southern Utah, offers one of the region’s most thrilling and visually striking slot canyon experiences. Known for its tight, winding passageways carved from vibrant red Navajo sandstone, this canyon highlights the powerful forces of nature that shaped the Grand Staircase-Escalante area. Its narrow corridors, some barely wide enough for hikers to squeeze through, create dramatic contrasts of light and shadow that change throughout the day, making every step a unique visual treat.

This slot canyon stands out for its challenging terrain, featuring rope-assisted descents, scrambling sections, and occasional shallow ankle-deep water crossings. These features demand steady footing and a good sense of balance, drawing adventurers who appreciate both the natural artistry and the physical challenge. The combination of smooth rock walls, occasional rock chokes, and twisting trails makes Spooky Slot one of the more dynamic slot canyons available to visitors near Kanab.

Spooky Slot isn’t just scenic; it’s part of the larger Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, a protected landscape known for exceptional geological diversity. The canyon’s remote location offers a peaceful retreat from crowded spots, although visitors should plan carefully due to its technical nature and narrow pathways. Local guides recommend starting at Peekaboo Canyon before descending through Spooky to avoid bottlenecks and ensure a smooth flow of hikers.

For those willing to take on its challenges, Spooky Slot Canyon delivers a memorable adventure rich with unusual formations, inviting a close-up view of southern Utah’s geological wonders.

This canyon used to be an absolute hidden gem, pristine and completely raw. Ever since official trail signs went up and apps started broadcasting the route, Spooky has been defaced with carved rock graffiti left by mindless slobs. If you visit, keep your "markings" off the rock and leave the sandstone alone instead of marking it with your worthless initials. Better yet, spend a few minutes trying to scratch away the vandalism left behind by others. It's infuriating to watch a pristine landscape get ruined by entitled, selfish vandals.

Beautiful! Long way down and long way back up, but very worth it. Must bring 4L of water or you could die. You have to climb up a large rock wall to get into the slot canyon. Must have good shoes with good tread! The road to get here is very bumpy so you’ll want a vehicle with good clearance
