Currently, only a small part of the park is open due to the recent heavy rain. You can walk here on your own without a guide, but it's definitely worth hiring one if you're there to see the animals, even though it's anything but cheap at $30 per person.

Ranger at the entrance informed us all trails were closed except the 2 km boardwalk to the beach, and yet the beach was closed too. Still required a $6 USD entrance fee per person. No thanks, not worth it. Shame, it's supposed to be beautiful and we were looking forward to it. Went to Manzanillo instead - donation entrance fee and lots of open trails.

Beautiful spot. Currently (end of August), only the boardwalk from the entrance to the beach is open; the rest is closed. A guide is recommended for wildlife viewing and more information. It's not exactly cheap, but at least you'll see things and get more detailed explanations.
