Our guide was amazing (his name is Santiago). He explained the history of the sloths in detail, and Mili was very active posing for photos, even in the rain. Everything was incredible. Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽

First off: The TV program "Achtung, Abzocke" (Attention, Scam) on Kabel 1 already warned about this animal rescue center in 2023 due to animal cruelty! Unfortunately, we only learned this six months after our visit. We were really looking forward to the rescue center and were then very shocked. A healthy sloth was being kept in an indoor cage with artificial turf. When I asked, the guide explained that this was the only cage and that the sloth had no access to an outdoor enclosure. It couldn't be released back into the wild because it had never learned to survive in the wild. We understood that, but we couldn't comprehend why it was being kept in a small indoor cage for its entire life. It constantly clambered from side to side along the bars. It seemed very distressed and was simply heartbreaking to watch. Keeping animals in such poor conditions for tourist entertainment has absolutely nothing to do with animal welfare in our opinion! The guide also said that the government had already expressed reservations regarding the type of stance taken. It's unbelievable that TUI Cruises still offers excursions there.
